While fighting a porn addiction, I finished a life lesson in Temptation.
I used to feel so guilty when I would be tempted. I felt dirty and unworthy of God’s love.
My accountability partner set me straight. He said that being tempted was not a sin. It is what you do AFTER the temptation that makes the difference. In fact, my accountability partner went as far as say that if Temptation was a sin, then Jesus sinned when Satan tempted him in the desert.
“Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.” ~Matthew 4:1
The bible says we all sin. The bible says we are all tempted.
“But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.” ~James 1:14 (ESV)
It is NOT the temptation that is the sin, but what I do about it. If we continue looking into Matthew 4, Jesus answered each temptation with scripture.
- Verse 4: “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
- Verse 6: “For the Scriptures say, ‘He will order his angels to protect you. And they will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.”
- Verse 7: “The Scriptures also say, “You must not test the Lord your God.”
- And finally in verse 10: “Get out of here, Satan,”…..”For the Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him'”
In fact, I tried to keep my eyes on Jesus, read scriptures, and pray, pray, and pray. I found that fighting the temptation made me stronger, and closer to God.
Is it easy? NO!! The last few months have been some of the most difficult fights of my life. I was constantly fighting Satan as he kept putting porn in my mind. If you read last week’s blog, you could see that I surrounded myself with all kinds of Godly things such as Praise Music and sound Christian messages.
My accountability partner would always remind me how deceptive Satan was for tempting me with porn in the first place and then making me feel guilty because he tempted me in the first place. WOW! What a double whammy.
But the bible tells me:
“No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” ~1 Corinthians 10:13
“And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words.” ~Romans 8:26
“What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us? Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else?” ~Romans 31-32
These are not just nice scriptures, but God’s Words that helped me get through one of the most difficult trials of my life.
Although I will always have to stay vigilant, the worst is over. God has healed me of my worst disability. He has truly made me a new creature in Christ.
